If it were anyone else but Charlize I might want to talk more about female objectification on movie promotional materials. But I look at that poster and I feel like it’s harder for someone like Theron to come across as objectified because, well, she really is a boss ass bitch. She’s strong looking and she’s never commodified or attempted to market her sexuality as part of a brand, so when she does choose to play a little sexy, it all feels very under her control and natural. So I feel way less weird about it.
Like I remember reading something that said that ‘sexy’ is the power in the hands of the person being viewed, ‘objectification’ is the power in the hands of the viewer. Theron always seems to hold the power with her sexuality and everything else, which to me seems way more female-centric in its gaze and appeal. She very outspoken about sexist industry portrayals of women too, I trust her to make it work with complexity on screen too.
As for the movie, it sounds like (from what I’ve heard from people who have already seen it), is that 1) It is actually great, and 2) It’s got like this whole 80’s thing going on with it, which would suggest its no longer the slow spy noir of the graphic novel and more a colorful action thriller. And given the director is the guy that did John Wick, I say bring it on. THat sounds awesome.
