Fiji is famed for its rugged landscape, crystal clear lagoons, white sandy beaches and loads of eco adventure activities. Fiji basically screams adventure, you can climb mountains, dive into see the coral reefs or take a long hike into the mountainous forests. A well-organized hiking trip to Fiji can be one of the best experiences you’ll have so plan your trip to have the time of your life!

Getting ready!

You’ve decided on your location so all you need is to plan and execute. Firstly, decide on the number of people who are going and their level of endurance. A beginner’s level hiker may not be able to go with a pro hiker so it’s best to organize a tour that suits all of the participants. Set your dates and plan out the trail and accommodation if necessary.

Deciding the hiking trail

Fiji is blessed with vast virgin forests and you will find plenty of options. Most Fiji luxury resorts including ones such as InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa have cleared trails to reach the local mountains but the dense vegetation limits the view. You can go on a professionally guided tour or a self-guided trek, as long you feel confident about it. If you are not only looking to get up close with nature then organize a tour that can help you get personal with the locals living in Fijian villages.

Make a trekking schedule

It is important to plan out your hiking trip in detail. Decide on the number of days and whether you plan to camp out or head back on the same day. If you are new to hiking then don’t over do it, since it has to be an enjoyable activity and not stressful. The endurance levels of all participants need to be taken into consideration too. If you are taking a professionally guided trekking tour then don’t worry about the trekking plan since they will cover all that.

List down your options

It’s not going to be easy to short list the hiking trails in Fiji since there are so many breathtaking scenic locations to choose from.

Koroyanitu National Park

Located close to Viti Levu, the Koroyanitu National Park will lead trekkers into the rainforest- covered trails. Here you can experience the diverse and distinct wildlife. You can also step into the Fijian villages within a short distance. The national park allows day treks and overnight camping facilities.

Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park

Found in Viti Levu Island, Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park starts at the edge of the Sigatoka River. The sand dunes stretch for four miles along the island’s coastal line. You will come across a variety of sights during the trek, nature related and historical such as pottery shards.

Bouma National Heritage Park

The highlight of the trek through Bouma National Heritage Park is the Tavaoro waterfalls. Consisting of three spectacular waterfalls called the lower, middle and upper Bouma waterfalls they are nestled in a serene setting where you can enjoy a dip to beat the tropical heat.
