At first I thought it would be pretty useless to write about getting better in English here as Medium is almost exclusively in English and therefore designed for people who understand English. But then I looked at myself and… I am not a native English speaker and I would have loved to see this kind of article back then, so why not do it for others !

So here are simple and fun ways to improve your English level :

1. Watch TV shows in English with English subtitles

google.com

I personally think that the most effective way to learn a language is by both hearing and reading at the same time that is why I like to turn the subtitles on as well as the original audio.

I’ll make an article on the best TV shows to learn English depending on the accent you are seeking to learn… Here it is : https://medium.com/@audeche23/tv-shows-to-improve-your-english-level-1610269483dc

2. Watch YouTube videos in English

google.com

If, like me, you spend way too much time watching videos on YouTube, you might as well want to make it useful. So, simply search subjects you are interested in, in English of course, in the search bar.

I’ll make an article on the best channels to learn English depending on the accent you are seeking to learn… Here it is : https://medium.com/@audeche23/youtube-channels-to-improve-your-english-level-d7a468de8054

3. Listen to music and sing it

google.com

Don’t you want to know what your favorite English song is about ? Search up the lyrics on a website like https://genius.com and try to translate it, use a translator like https://www.wordreference.com.

If you like to sing, try to analyze the pronunciation of the singer and get as close as you can to their accent, since you are used to hear the song, it won’t take you too long to memorize the lyrics and properly sing along !

4. Read in English

google.com

This one is for my fellow readers, why don’t you grab a book in English to try it ? You can choose to start with your favorite book in your native language, so that you know you will like it and won’t be lost in the story since you already know it.

5. Take some classes

leverageedu.com

If you want to improve quickly, you might as well want to invest and take a few classes, online or in person. You can look for a professor on apps for cheaper options.

6. Learn English online

facebook.com

You can also find a lot of apps to improve your level but most of them are not free. I believe the best one is Duolingo, since you have access to all the things you need for free and the adds don’t interrupt you in the middle of a practice.

I will write an article on the pros and cons of Duolingo… Here it is : https://medium.com/@audeche23/duolingo-pros-cons-my-experience-a45b4e74b003

englishlive.ef.com

If you are willing to pay, I recommend you try the EF program which even comes with a little certificate at the end.

7. Find someone to speak/write in English with

fr.freepik.com

Ask a friend, a family member or whoever is willing to, to switch your interaction language to English. You can then correct each other and get used to communicating in English. To practice your pronunciation, you can search videos on YouTube, most are well made and easy to follow.

You can also speak to yourself in English, once you’ll get used to it, you’ll be doing it… way too often ! (me? no I’m not doing that- never !)

8. Write in English

Finally, try to write your thoughts of the day or sum it up in English. Doing so every day or two will help you to massively improve your writing skills.

I will be making this type of article for learning Spanish and French as well
