#WomenPodcasters: Sports Pods from Around the Globe

By Erik Heiss Director of Content at audioBoom

Women have been participating in the world of sports commentary for decades now, and with the growth in podcasting there are more opportunities than ever for them to talk about the athletes and events we all love to watch.

Here are five female-hosted and produced podcasts about sports from around the world.

Who: A revolving lineup of sports journalists from around the country. Recent episodes have been hosted by Sarah Lauch, Jillian Mele and Michelle Smith.

Where: USA

What: Originally produced as a documentary by CSN Bay Area, the podcast series features in-depth stories of many of the world’s most prominent female athletes, broadcasters and sports executives.

Download: This episode with NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya where she discusses her desire to shed the “female sports journalist” label and encourages more women to join the sports media business.

2. The iHeartMiko Podcast

Who: Miko Grimes

Where: USA

What: Miko is a retired hooper and the wife of cornerback, Brent Grimes. She is no-holds barred when it comes to expressing her opinions and goes deep on topics most sports journalists won’t touch with a ten-foot pole. This show is 100% NSFW so make sure those earbuds are in!

Download: In this episode, Miko looks at Tony Romo’s future home, what’s left in the tank for Darrelle Revis, and whether or not Oprah will be the next female to run for president.

3. The Offside Rule

Who: Lynsey Hooper, Kait Borsay and Hayley McQueen

Where: UK

What: The self-described “three likely lasses” were bored of listening to middle aged men talk about football and wanted to capture a different side of the beautiful game. Guests on the show include England’s all-time record cap holder Rachel Yankey and legends of the game like Cyrille Regis. Plus, every episode has updates the Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga and Ligue 1 from female football experts around the world.

Download: This episode where Lynsey, Hayley and Kait look back on a jam-packed season and revisit their earlier predictions for 2017.

4. The Inside Line F1 Podcast

Who: Mithila Mehta

Where: India

What: The Inside Line F1 Podcast is a weekly show that adds some much needed humor to the otherwise serious world of Formula. With two decades of reporting under her belt, Mithila Mehta is a true motorhead! Along with co-host Kunal Shah, Mithila has interviewed current F1 world champion Nico Rosberg, Force India drivers Sergio Perez & Nico Hulkenberg, and F1 veteran David Coulthard.

Download: In this episode Mithila and Kunal discuss Max Verstappen’s maiden victory. Interesting enough, in an episode a week prior to his win, our hosts Kunal and Mithila had predicted the same. Both the hosts discuss more about Max V, the ‘Civil War’ that broke out on track between the Mercedes drivers, and about Lauda-Hamilton bromance.

5. Tara And Johnny

Who: Tara Lipinski

Where: USA

What: Figure skating legend Tara Lipinsky (and co-host Johnny Weir) brings a fresh and funny approach to sports commentary. The show pairs hilarious anecdotes from the hosts’ personal lives with candid discussions about knowing when to give up on Olympic dreams, Opening Ceremony fashions and, of course, getting ready for the games.

Download: In this episode Tara and Johnny discuss giving up their Olympic dreams and how other athletes negotiate that same decision. Plus, retired golf pro and fellow podcaster David Feherty joins the fun to share his first impressions of the Olympics.
