Hi! My name is Audrey I’m from Piedmont California, a small city in the Bay area near San Francisco. I’m a junior studying elementary education and communication studies in the hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher after college. Many people ask me why I left California to come to Marquette and I don’t have an answer other than that I knew some friends that went here, visited and loved it! I look forward to coming back to Milwaukee every time I leave and I have had the opportunity to make friends that live in all parts of the country, which gives me an excuse to travel and visit them.

I first became interested in becoming a teacher when I worked in a primarily Spanish speaking elementary school helping students learn math and English during my junior and senior years of high school. I loved working with students and helping them find different ways of understanding the material. Many of the kids I worked with had not had the special attention and extra instruction they needed, and did not understand the math concepts that they had been practicing in class. It was so fulfilling to know that I made a direct impact on each child and was able to help them excel in their classes. All they needed was a little extra help and attention that they were not able to get in a big class with only one teacher. Those two years working in that school are what inspired me to want to teach and help others.

In elementary and middle school, social studies was my favorite subject. My teachers were extremely passionate about each subject and integrated fun and interactive projects and field trips that intertwined with the topics we were learning about. We read historical fiction books as a class that integrated English Language Arts and History, and took fields trips including a weekend gold mining trip where we learned about the gold rush and “mined” for fake gold in a river. When I become a teacher I hope that I can integrate fun and learning into my lessons as well.
