Lemnos Island
Let’s travel to Greece’s anti-oasis in the Aegean sea, meeting point of Europe, Asia and Africa.
Cultural Overview
Welcome to Lemnos Island in Greece, home to the Pachies Ammoudies
(Παχιές Αμμουδιές της Λήμνου) of Gomati.
Over there, natural erosion caused by the sea winds birthed a tiny desert of 7 hectares (17,5 acres).
Lemnos’ desert is far from being a dead and static place though. It continuously shape shifts under the wind’s spell, embalmed in the sweet scent of white lilies and olive trees, springing to life after sunset as bunnies hop out of their burrows.
According to ancient Greeks, the island was home to metallurgy God Hephaestus. Definitely the nicest desert to settle in, as it is only 3 kilometers away from the beach!
Administrative Divisions
The island forms a separate municipality within the Lemnos regional unit, which is part of the North Aegean region. The principal town of the island and seat of the municipality is Myrina. At 477.583 square kilometres (184.396 sq mi), it is the 8th-largest island of Greece.
