Everyone in modern digital age can be susceptible to being hacked due to prevalent use of wireless techniques, e.g, Wi-Fi (internet), Bluetooth (speaker & phone & what have you), and Cellular Network (phone).

Let us first discuss about the Wi-Fi technique focusing on the multiple ways how this can be attacked that include acquiring the password (PSK) as well as eavesdropping on Wi-Fi traffic.

This post is a chapter of “Learning Networks with Linux” (see the full list).

It will be beneficial to understand inner workings of Wi-Fi, formally a family of wireless network protocols based on the IEEE 802.11 family of standards.

Terminologies

Let us get used to basic Wi-Fi terms for better understanding.

AP (Access Point) The wireless device users connect to for internet access

PSK (Pre-Shared-Key) The password used to authenticate to the AP

SSID (Service Set Identifier) The name of the network

BSSID (Basic Service
