Secundus
Sometimes (not very often) I see shows multiple times.
It’s like re-reading a great book, or seeing a movie more than once, the second time you see more because you’re not watching blind, you know what to expect so you can appreciate it when it comes.
Broadway is usually too expensive enable that kind of habit; unless you’re swimming in money you probably can’t afford to see a great show enough times to feel like you live and breathe it (that’s what cast albums are for, after all), but the beauty of shows is that each time you do see them, you see something new. The best shows never get old, they improve with time and grow with the interpretations of an evolving cast. Or, at least, that’s my theory.
And if the tickets remain cheap enough, and the show runs long enough, I might be able to prove that theory true with this show.
It’s Head Over Heels, a new musical based on a poem published in 1590 set to the music of the Go-Go’s… and it’s so much fun.
It’s not going to tear you inside out like Hamilton or Next to Normal or Spring Awakening, but it’s a pretty great example of how ancient thinking and narrative structure continue to inform our modern society.
Plus, Go-Go’s music!
And, tickets are still cheap enough that I can justify seeing it twice, at least.
I look forward to getting to know it better.
