The Story
Flora Bagenal wrote an article in the Huffington Post explaining the dangers of the so-called love marriages that many Nepali children enter into to escape desperate situations at home. Aid agencies and NGOs are targeting communities where early marriage is common to encourage their children to keep their girls in school and delay matches until their bodies are more mature.
Why I chose it
I was attracted to this article because my sorority’s national philanthropy is Domestic Violence Awareness. This connects to the article because young girls marrying in Nepal not only lose out on an education, but also endure an increased risk of domestic violence. I wanted to more information on the prevention tactics Nepal is taking to prevent child love marriages.
Social Media Response
The article was well received in social media. Commenters at the bottom of the page discuss the importance of focusing on the desperate situation at home, where the roots of the issue lie. One reader believes that living with at home with abusive parents sounds worse than running away and getting into a bad love marriage.
