In late May 2023, my two friends and I decided to participate in a UI/UX Design competition organized by one of the student organizations in my department called ISCE (Information System Celebration Event).

The competition was themed “Catch Customer Attention with Your Coffee Shop App Design.” Together with my friends, we embarked on a journey of exploration and reference gathering, determining the functionality of the application and setting boundaries for our problem statement. We focused on a coffee shop that was a partner for this competition, allowing our UX research process to be more targeted and consider various aspects such as color palette, menu items, and other elements that would support the design process in line with the specified theme.

Without much hesitation, and with a fairly tight submission deadline, we made every effort to create a design that would be both excellent and useful for future users. The design process was not as straightforward as we initially thought. We started by collecting references for applications that aligned with the competition theme. Once we found several relevant references, we began brainstorming ideas to create a functional application that would meet the future users’ needs.

In a nutshell, within just two days of work, we successfully created a specialized application design for one of the coffee shops we selected as the object of our project.

Then came the most thrilling moment — the announcement of the winners for the UI/UX Design competition held by the student association of the Information System department at Andalas University’s Faculty of Information Technology. To our surprise, despite the tight deadline, our team, named “IGA TEAM,” secured the first position and won the Favorite Team award for the University-level UI/UX Design competition.

We feel incredibly grateful and deeply thankful for my teammates, Imma and Gita, who were collaborative, solid, and never gave up. It is through our collective efforts that we achieved this recognition as an appreciation for the hard work we put in together.

This experience has been truly valuable and will undoubtedly be unforgettable. I am excited to generate many more interesting ideas and designs in the future opportunities that lie ahead.
