Story involves all our emotions and senses. We place ourselves inside the action. Our brain doesn’t care if we’re really there or not. In fact, in our daily lives, we don’t actually perceive reality in real-time. Everything we experience has already happened. Our eyes, ears, fingers, noses, and tongues all have to go through a series of electrical processes with a slight delay. You cannot experience reality in real-time, only through sensual story (not that kind — you and your dirty mind).
Semicolons are dumb. If you must use a semicolon, their only purpose is to join two independent clauses. I like em-dashes instead (they look like — not -). This is my thing. You can use as many semicolons are you wish, but there’s a trend away from the old, dusty semicolon. Em-dashes are more versatile and forgiving. Plus they’re fun to make (hit the dash key twice).
