I remember being irked by that ford advert when I first saw it. Even with knowledge of the political scandal that inspired the ad, even whit the knowledge Ford had never approved it and never meant to put it out, it’s wrong. So wrong on so many levels.

And then I realized I was also bothered by the fact the artist didn’t even bother to research what a proper ball gag looks like when it’s worn. Those things look like you could just spit them out. But they didn’t. The women in that ad are letting those ineffective things silence them. I know I’m reading way too much symbolism in a thoughtless drawing, but there it is. Three woman I can only see as complicit in their own forced silence. Not fair. But also not inaccurate.

So thank you, Violet, for being a woman who has spit out that useless ball gag.
