And why is the railroad so far from the centre?

It is (very) loosely based on the town I grew up in, in Limburg, the Netherlands. The railroad station there is located closer to the farm lands and grazing fields, than near town center. I’m not sure if that’s by design, making it a freight stop rather than a passenger stop, or just because they ‘granted’ the town a stop on the tracks between two much more important locations. But a 2 to 3 km stretch of unlit road through wheat fields seemed to be exactly the sort of thing this town needed.
