Gabriel Jourdan, you are absolutelly right — company culture is the key and tools can only support the culture. People have to be thoughtful about the way they communicate. However, there is something about the tool design as well. Real time chats do not work well across time zones as messages scroll by too quickly and get buried within hours. So employees in outlying time zones, or those who needed to switch-off to get important work done, do not have a chance to participate in the discussions. Similarly, it is difficult for a newbie to understand what is important as many topics are blended together in a channel. In these instances asynchronous clearly has the advantage.
