Got an important phone call today. It might be something really awesome.

Abbott and I changed the oil in the Explorer this morning; and by Abbott and I, I mean Abbott got on the ground, and got oil all over his hands and even in his mouth while I knelt in front of him providing emotional support.

My family is a very do-it-yourself kind of bunch. Very rarely is it something that all of us are at loss at what to do. Cars don’t got to the mechanic, and handy-men don’t fix our leaks. At the center of that attitude is my dad. I’ve always admired my dad for simply knowing a lot about pretty much everything. Cars, boats, tools, audio, woodworking, photography, math, science; he’s even a great cook. My dad is the first call and you can always count him.

Most of all, I admire the way he learned all of what he knows. In my generation, when you don’t know what to do, you google it and find a YouTube tutorial. If you wanted to know how to fix the fuel intake on a boat, you had to read the manual. If you wanted a working knowledge of a reel to reel, you read the book and studied sound recording.

Through this route of learning you took more time to find your answer, but you also gained a better understanding of the topic in general.

Bums me out sometimes that maybe I missed out on knowing more… but I really did appreciate Khan Academy during my junior year physics class.
