Sure they didn't have 8 cellphones back then but they could feed 8 people, 3 times per day. They could house 8 people on one income and they have spare bedrooms in their homes. All on one income. On top of all that high middle income homes had maids and gardeners. At least that's how it was in Europe in the turn of the century 1850 to 1910...
