I agree. My top priority in this election is stopping Trump because if there is to be a future for the Republican Party, Trump must first lose.
But the fact remains that he got enough votes to win the nomination. He was not an unknown quantity before this election, people knew what he was and voted for him anyway.
People see the same Trump as we do – lying constantly, behaving like a 12 year old brat, unaware of basic realities about the world we live in, etc. – and still chose to vote for him.
Ultimately Trump is the moment the Republican Party’s two factions, the professional class and the working class, realize they have nothing in common and aren’t actually on the same side.
Burkean Conservatism doesn’t matter to Trump voters. It never has and never will. The only thing Trump did was reveal that.
