Why Tim Cook’s Superbowl photo actually might not be so bad
As an overly technical geek and perfectionist, I grew up thinking what a made a great photograph was it’s technical perfection … but I’ve come to realize a great image is one which moves the viewer emotionally, not necessarily the one which is scientifically flawless.
Tim has received a great deal of criticism for the image he posted on Twitter (left) but I actually think it’s imperfection makes it all the better. In this instance, the blurriness has a way of transporting the viewer onto the field, into the the raw emotion and crazy energy of the moment.
A couple hours later, another image was posted (right)… perfectly balanced, shot from way up in the stands, tack sharp and technically sound.
Compare them side-by-side — which one makes you feel something? Which one makes you wish you were there?
Personally, I prefer the blur and like to think Tim ran onto the field, snapping this image amidst pure euphoria celebrating his team’s victory. There’s a place for perfection, but I’m just not sure it’s here.
