Day 1–06 August 2016
A below -par performance by Indian athletes on the first day of Summer Olympics in 2016.
However, Men’s Hockey Team gave all the reason to cheer as they defeated Ireland — 3–2. Rupinder was the shining star of the team. The team will carry over this confidence in the next clash against Germany on 08 August 2016.

Another good news came from Men’s Single Sculls’ event wherein Dattu Bhokanal, an Armyman qualified for the quarterfinals.

Archery: The women’s trio of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Lakshmirani Manjhi gave a lackluster performance. However, Atanu Das lifted the hopes of Indian supporter by standing fifth in the Ranking Round. Next, he shall compete with Nepal’s Muktan Jitbahadur.
Unfortunately, the shooting events ended in a disappointment; lot of hopes were pinned on the shooters.
Women’s 10 M Air Rifle — Ayonika Paul and Apurvi Chandela crashed out in the first round itself
Men’s 10 M Air Pistol — Gurpreet Singh made an early exit while Jitu Rai finished 8th.
Tennis — Leander Paes, participating in his 7th Olympics, and probably the last one, failed to advance to the next round with partner Rohan Bopanna. The Indian duo was defeated by the Polish duo, Marcin Matkowski and Lukas Kubot, and that too in straight sets :(.
Even the women’s pair of Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare faced a crushing defeat in the hands of Chinese pair Shuai Peng and Zhang Shuai.
Table Tennis: The Indian quartet of Mouma Das, Manika Batra, veteran Achanta Sharath Kamal, and Soumyajit Ghosh were off colour. However, Manika Batra gave a tough fight to her Polish opponent, Katarzyna Franc-Grzybowska.
Weightlifting: Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, India’s brightest hope for a medal in Women’s 48kg was unable to fire on Day 1 of the Rio Olympics. She failed in all three attempts of the Clean and Jerk.
