‘’THE MORE YOU OWN, THE POORER YOU ARE.’’
- HENRY DAVID THOREAU.
I have often tried to figure out what ‘success’ means.
But, unfortunately, the definition always eludes me!
Success is a very relative term. Some people are happy with monetary compensation whilst some people work for fame, power, etc.
This brings us to the moot point as to what does success mean?
The aim of society is today diverging towards monetary greed. Money is the key to everything!
Once you have the monetary means, the rest can be bought. Knowledge, respect, love can be purchased today.
Is money the key to all material needs?
The answer seems to be: ‘’Yes.”
However, all needs need not be material in nature.
Bhagvat Gita propounds the doctrine of ‘non-possession’. This principle has been followed by many leading luminaries like Mahatma Gandhi and Thoreau. Needs for material things have a cascading effect. They only multiply with time.
We need to know where to draw the line. This is the only panacea for all the woes afflicting society today.
Frugality, simplicity and decency which are needed can only be restored to our society today if this madness for monetary rewards ceases.
Do we really need a penthouse when our housing needs can be fulfilled with a simple flat? Do we need a house to adumbrate our monetary success or to simply fulfill our housing needs?
These are some points we need to ponder about!
