Consumer Reports picks the best used cars to buy

The product watchdogs at Consumer Reports release their annual Autos issue this week, where they have an in-depth analysis of new and used cars, trucks and SUVs. Consumer Reports looks at reliability data from their readers in addition to their own testing to determine which cars are best buys in every segment.

When it comes to used cars, they grouped their picks into a few segments with $5,000 intervals to help buyers with any budget. For vehicles under $10,000, Consumer Reports recommends the 2008 Mazda 3, 2005 Acura TL and 2005 Honda Pilot. These vehicles handle better than their competition, while still offering the reliability buyers want.

In the $10,000 to $15,000 range, the 2010–2012 Kia Soul, 2006–2007 Infiniti G35 and 2005–2007 Toyota Highlander V6 are CR’s top picks. The Soul has many tech features in a stylish, roomy, yet compact car. The G35 has a winning combination of luxury and sportiness, and the Highlander offers space for seven while not being an unmanageable size.

For cars under $20,000, the best choices are the 2010–2013 Toyota Prius, 2008–2012 Honda Accord and 2006–2008 Lexus RX. The Prius has one of the industry’s best reliability records, in addition to its fantastic gas mileage. The Accord has always been a good blend of reliability, comfort and fuel economy while still being fun to drive. The upscale Lexus RX, especially in Hybrid trims, offers decent mileage in addition to strong reliability and a luxurious interior.

If you have a little more to spend, the 2012–2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid and 2011–2012 Nissan Murano are some of Consumer Reports’ favorites. The Camry has fuel economy numbers in the high 30’s and the Murano has one of the best interiors in its class. Both vehicles offer exceptional reliability.

Buyers looking to get the best deal on a used car should look to certified pre-owned programs, offered at many dealerships. They typically are only the best quality used cars that have been thoroughly checked over, and can usually be had with a warranty. Used car dealer Enterprise Car Sales is a great place to look at many of the cars on this list and make comparisons in person.
