Say you got this search query in the input. But naturally you want to add some quotations to some phrase to get better results, in this case you want to add quotations around “flying cars in the congo” for some reason. So right now the only way to do that is if you place the cursor with your mouse over the edges of the phrase and type “.

But what if hovering over the input showed some indicator, like a vertical line, and showed some options on click, like a “. In other words, you could just hover over the input and move around and insert quotation marks using only the mouse, here’s an example image:

This would allow the operation of quoting phrases to be performed much faster when you don’t want to leave your mouse. This is similar to how mobile phones show an indicator when pressing and moving, in this case it would work when hovering just above the input. Also more options apart from “ could be added perhaps in the future.

Edit: Also selecting/highlighting a piece of text should show a quoting button somewhere.
