The 5 Elements You Need to Optimize on Your Business Website

If you’re serious about generating a lead flow from your business website, you need more than simply build the website. You need to optimize it.
I’m sure you heard about SEO or Search Engine Optimization.
SEO is the process of optimizing your online content so that the search engines like to show it as a top result for searches of certain keywords.
The important aspect of SEO is making your website easy to understand for both users and search engines. SEO helps search engines figure out what your online content is about and how it may be useful to users.
In short, SEO is the art of helping users find your content online.
SEO is a long-term strategy, it requires constant evaluation, testing, and reworking if it’s going to be effective.
That being said, there are many business owners who don’t have the resources or time to do proper SEO for their business website.
Here are the five website elements you need to optimize to get started.
1. Page Titles
A page title is the text you see on top of your browser window when viewing a web page. It is also the title of the page shown in search engine results.
Page titles can be found it your website’s HTML file. Its the text surrounded with the <title></title> tag. Here are some of the best practices for coming up with effective page titles:
- Write page titles that describe and aligns with the page content
- Include relevant keywords
- Place the keyword at the beginning of the title
- Make it fewer than 70 characters long as the longer titles will get cut off in the search results.
- Include your company name at the end of the page title
- Use unique page titles for each page of your website.
So if you’re a flower shop at Homestead, you could use something like this:

2. Meta Descriptions
meta descriptions are short summaries you can write for your web page which search engines will display on search results.
These descriptions don’t count much towards search engine rankings, but they are incredibly useful for the websites.
When creating a meta description, the goal should be writing compelling copy that accurately describes what’s on the page so that the searchers will be tempted to click and see what’s on the page.
If certain texts appear larger or prominent than others in the webpage, it’s probably a heading. It normally surrounded with <h1>, <h2>, or <h3>tag.
Both search engines and viewers tend to pay more attention to headings in comparison to the regular paragraph text. It's a good reason to include keywords in headings whenever possible.
- Keep in mind that <h1> gives the text more weight as keywords than <h2>or <h3>
- Use <h1> tag only once in a page as too many of them dilutes the importance of keywords in the heading
- If the page is text heavy, like a blog page make feel free to use a couple of <h2>or <h3> tags as paragraph tiles.
Images on your web page can enhance user experience. When using an image on your website, you should optimize it and keep in mind the following
- More pictures can slow down the web page negatively affecting both the user experience and SEO. Always use a minimum number of images on the web page
- Always alt text on your images, they are relevant text descriptions of your image. For some reason, even if your images get failed to render this will ensure that the users still understand the information you’re presenting.
- Include keywords in your image file name and alt text. This will help you get traffic from image searches. Keep in mind to separate words with a dash(-)
5. URL Structure
URL of a website is its website address. The simplest way to increase your chance at SEO is changing your website page structure to SEO friendly URL structure.
For an ideal URL structure, I recommend using a simple and clear permalink structure ending with post name or page name.
Here are few practices to keep in mind:
- Try to include keywords in the URL
- Separate keywords with dashes (-).
- Structure your URL so that users can easily understand what information they are going to find on the page. It's reassuring to see http://sarahsflowers.com/flowers/red-roses instead of something like http://sarahsflowers.com/1212?/eh?
- Use 301 redirects when necessary. A 301 redirect forwards an old URL to a new one. Make sure you do this when you change the URL of a web page on your website. (Pro tip: Make sure you’ve applied 301 redirects to both www and non-www version of your website. Search engines will treat both www.yourwebsite.com and yourwebsite.com as different versions and give separate credits to both)
Always remember that the ultimate objective of these optimization efforts is to get more exposure and traffic to your business or website contents.
Small businesses often benefit from ranking in the geo-focused terms, but don’t chase after the latest SEO buzzword.
Think from your customers point of view. Includes those keywords when a customer will use when they trying to search on the internet and create contents and optimized pages around those keywords.
