Location

If you choose a gym on the other side of town, will you really make it there consistently to work out? Often, a gym located somewhere between your home and office (or school) is best. On days when you’re crunched for time, having a gym close by will make things easier on your hectic schedule. After all, a good workout is supposed to lower your stress level, not increase it.

What Kind of Credentials Does the Staff Have?

People often forget how important it is to have qualified staff there to guide them on proper alignment on a machine, or proper form in a class, say our experts. Though many clubs pride themselves on the quality and education of their staff, there are others who are less conscientious about certification.

You cannot afford to be that way, the experts say. You don’t want to get injured doing something you shouldn’t be doing, or are doing incorrectly.

Do They Have the Goods?

If you like to use a particular machine or require ample space to stretch out after your workout, make sure the gym you’re considering has this. Check out the equipment, stretching areas, cardio machines, dumbbells — anything you think you’ll need! Even more importantly, make sure there’s enough equipment for everyone so you won’t have to wait in line to get your sweat on.

The Background Check

From childcare to personal trainers to engaging classes, most gyms feature enticing services–but it’s important to test-drive as many of them as possible. Assessing the competency and experience of the staff should be a primary factor. Cotton, also the national director of certification for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), recommends inquiring about the educational and certification levels of staff members, particularly trainers.

Staff members with bachelor degrees in kinesiology, physical education or exercise physiology are also qualified to field complex questions about fitness routines and health issues. When touring a facility, be sure to watch staff members interact with clients, and be aggressive in asking about experience and background.

Take the same inquisitive and hands-on approach when evaluating classes, equipment and other aspects of the facility. Many gyms will allow potential members to try the club for one day at no charge or for a nominal fee, which is essential to informing your final decision.

Hours Of Operation

Everybody has an alternate inclination for when they get a kick out of the chance to work out. A few people are early morning individuals where others would rather hold up until the exercise center is vacant and go late into the night.
