Cooling Towers and their Application Explained

A cooling tower is basically a device that dissipates heat from water through partial evaporation. Classification of cooling towers –

Cooling towers are basically classified on the basis of a way of air induction into the tower. In this way, the equipment is categorized into two different types, i.e., natural draft cooling towers and mechanical draft equipment.

A natural draft device as the name suggests is the device in which the air gets circulated within the tower with the help of natural force. The device mainly relies on the force of wind to generate the draft of air thereby enabling the movement of fans inside the tower. They are termed as maintenance free cooling towers as they require little maintenance due to their natural air flow and process control. The natural draft device is classified into two basic types namely spray type as well as splash deck type.

The second type of cooling tower on the basis of air induction is a mechanical draft. They are more or less similar to natural ones with the only difference being that air gets circulated within the tower through electricity instead of natural force. Since the air supplied mechanically, these devices use centrifugal or propeller fans in order to ensure smoother operation.

This one type of tower is smaller in size than the natural draft ones due to due to increased volume of air supplied by the fan. The advantage of this type of cooling tower is that the capacity of such equipment can be controlled by simply minimizing the speed of the fan that supplies the air. This type of cooling equipment is basically classified into two different types on the basis of the location of the fan that supplies the air. Forced draft cooling device and induced draft equipment are the two main types of mechanical draft industrial devices.

Some cool towers make use of natural draft technique whereas, on the other hand, some use the mechanical draft technique. In mechanical draft types of equipment, power-driven fan motors are used. Here some use forced a draft, while some utilize induced draft along with the fan-assisted natural draft.
