There’s some advice on copywriting that gets out there every day cluttering newsfeeds, and most of it is pretty damn obvious.

Know your TG, speak your brand language, and so on. You know the whole shebang. And yeah, that’s good to know to be good at the craft.

But if you want to real deal, and want your copy to have a compelling impact, you need something that is not so obvious.

Copy is the most powerful weapon in your creative team’s arsenal. Done well, get it right and it can amass attention even on a plain white background, sans design.

But if you don’t get it right, even an avant-garde, award-winning design can’t save you.

Sadly, in times of ever-decreasing attention spans and deadlines, copy doesn’t get the attention and respect it deserves from copywriters.

So, then…

What can you add to your creative process to make your copy shine?

How can your copy make the desired impact?

How can you edit and refine your copy to perfection?

Scroll down for one of the best advice on the subject from none other than Adrian Holmes — a copywriter who has won multiple awards, been the ex-CCO of Lowe & Partners Worldwide, and one-time president of D&AD.

PS: These are curated from an excerpt from The Copy Book by D&AD and while Adrian gives out more than 9 points on copywriting, I’ve curated the top 4 that have helped me a great deal in my work.
