Megan Newsome isn’t a plain girl. Anyone who meets her could tell you that. When I see her, her aesthetic screams Manhattan art dealer or French fashion influencer. She's always drinking coffee and other girls stare at her wearing her funky, plaid cigarette pants and are jealous of her cool-girl style. She isn’t bravely outspoken or deathly hilarious but she is definitely one of the most unique person I’ve met out of the entirety of the Mass Communication major at Georgia College. This is Megan Josephine Newsome.

q. We actually met at blackbird so to break the ice, how do you like your coffee?

a. Honestly I’m versatile with my coffee preferences. I like it all, every way but never decaffeinated.

q. That day at blackbird, we were there for a media mixer and I know you are involved in Bobcat video production clubs and are interested in photography and the student run radio. Which medium holds your interest most and why?

a. I would say I like Bobcat media productions the most because that’s the field I'm most interested in and that’s what I need to learn the most about right now.

q. What kind of cameras do you own for specifically filming footage?

a. I use the Nikon Coolpix L830. It’s a very affordable camera- nothin’ fancy which I love because I don’t think you need a big fancy camera to make the art you want to make. So yeah.

q. I’ve been on your Youtube channel and I've watched some of your work. Can you describe your personal theme and how that plays into the music you choose or filters you might use to edit your work?

a. Ummm I like capturing the small moments and focusing on them to show their importance. I have a playlist of songs on my phone that inspire me to make videos. Um all my videos start with a song I like so when I hear a song that I really like I picture the type of shots that I would do with it. I would do that to capture the feeling of that song if that makes sense.

q. Do you have a director or a photographer that you either identify with or whose work you enjoy?

a. Um yeah! Growing up I have found a lot of inspiration from Sophia Coppola with her movies “Lost in Translation,” and “The Virgin Suicides”, and her daughter- actually Gia Coppola got into the film industry too and really has followed in her footsteps and her films are ones that I've really enjoyed too.

q. You belong to multiple student run creativity outlets at Georgia College. What do you think should be done better at the school for the creativity programs and why?

a. That’s a good question! I think there should be more unity overall. Obviously a lot of people belong to multiple clubs and like creative outlets but I think there should be more mixers and collaborations because as a major at the university we could all learn a lot from each other and if we were involved with each others work a lot of cool stuff could happen.

q. What kind of work do you see yourself specifically doing in the media industry some day?

a. I haven’t narrowed it down to one specific role or career but that’s what's so great about mass communications because it offers a lot of options but right now somehow getting into the film industry would be like a dream.

q. How would you say that Georgia College is helping to mold you into the type of person that could complete that job to the best of your ability? If you wouldn’t say that then please elaborate.

a. Georgia College has already taught me how to be my own person in my own space with dorms and living on your own and everything. Its also taught me to learn quickly because classes are definitely uhh- they don’t move slowly. Also with the existence of all these creative clubs I can learn skills that aren’t even offered as parts of classes.

q. As a creative, well plugged-in member of the sophomore class, it might be insightful to see which social media platforms that not only you prefer but also what you think that majority of our classmates prefer.

a. Most of the time I am on twitter and I definitely think that the majority of our class is on twitter as well. And that has nothing to do with my major its just that twitter is funny.

q. In your opinion is there a way that Georgia College could become more “plugged in” in social media as a way to get on a similar level with students so that we would have a bigger platform to discuss our school experience on?

a. I think GC does a really good job on social media. I follow the Instagram for GC and they have very diverse posts. Some are vintage pics from the 90’s. Some are student spotlights and some show what’s happening on campus. So no complaint there.
