Men and Feminism

I am not a feminist, and I believe a man cannot become a feminist. If a straight person supports LGBT that does not make the straight person an LGBT himself or herself. Similarly I support women in feminism, but this does not make me a feminist. Men cannot totally identify with or understand the issues faced by women. And I believe in the philosophy that only women ( including trans women) who live the life of a woman can claim to be the 'Feminists' in the world.

But what is imperative for men is to become allies of women in their fight for equality. All of us do realise that the world we live in is biased towards men and their rights. The majority of institutions and systems are designed to advantage men.

“Despite all the progress that we have made in the world, gender equality is still not pervasive in all parts of our society.”

The majority of positions of power are dominated by men.

Historically speaking, men like John Stuart Mill and Fredrick Douglass have long supported the struggle for gender equality. In John Stuart Mill’s words: “The legal subordination of one sex to another – is wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hindrances to human improvement; and that it ought to be replaced by a system of perfect equality, admitting no power and privilege on the one side, nor disability on the other.”

In recent times, there are a few men such as Andy Murray, who hired and championed a female coach, Amélie Mauresmo. And Ryan Gosling, who has become something of a feminist icon.

But the path is still long, and more and more men are needed into the conversation.
