A Big Reason Why We Have Awful Coders

There are lots of people who love coding. But few people can write really good code. There is one big reason why many programming enthusiasts write bad code. The surprising fact is that this exact reason is why many programmers get into programming.

MOVIES, Yes movies play the big role of inspiring young programmers as well as making them bad programmers.
As a person who started interested in programming because of movies, I find it really sad that reality is often disappointing. There are lots of movies and TV shows that portray a cool guy who is a programmer and does amazing stuff with his laptop. Like hacking into Interpol database (cliche), defusing bombs and changing the trajectory of incoming missiles and lots of unrealistic cool stuff. I love the scene where Neo asks for “guns, lots of guns” and by typing something fast on a terminal, lot of guns appear in front of Neo.
The one big reason why those movies make us awful at programming is that those movies show programmers as super-fast coders. They make us think that the speed of coding and the quantity of code is what makes us cool programmers. People somehow equates speed of coding to the smartness of the coder.
Programming is basically problem-solving, and even though it’s true that solving faster have its own advantages, the more time we invest in thinking how a problem should solve have a significant role in the quality of the solution that is is obtained. Also, one of the reasons that make us slow while coding is writing comments and naming of variables, functions etc. These are little things that make the code readable and understandable. Young programmers who are focused on lines of codes and speed of coding as the benchmark of smartness ignore these things that improve the code.
I do like those blitz hacking scenes in the movies but I don’t think Hollywood would show the realistic way of programming in thriller movies because regardless of how wonderful the coding experience is to programmers, the general audience would not get the adrenaline rush in their veins if they show it.
