The Third Transportation Revolution
John Zimmer

Great so far as it goes…

This piece takes us a long way in the direction of laying out the case against car culture but it doesn’t take us nearly far enough.

Zimmer points out that most cars are idle 96% of the time and active just 4% but he doesn’t mention the next important, and matching, statistic: when cars are active, 96% of their energy is being used to move the car and only 4% to move the occupant. So, even a drastically reduced fleet of on-call autonomous cars is still an incredibly wasteful and inefficient way to distribute our resources. We need to design cities for people, which means getting them around less, and using mass transit for most of the getting around. The autonomous on-call vehicles should be just for odds and ends, not the center of the system.
