Here in the US we are quick to recognize that how we are viewed by the average North Korean or rural Afghani or even rural Cuban — violent terror-spreading God-hating oppressors — is an outgrowth of the media and educational systems of those places, but we aren’t so quick to recognize that how we are viewed by people in Jacksonville or Provo or Flagstaff is no less an outgrowth of the media and educational systems of those places, and no less biased or guided by special interests.

Our mental furniture is provided for us, and the internet age encourages hoarding more of what we already have and more of what grabs our attention. The available space is getting crowded with cartoons and livestreams of people behaving badly.

One proposition: let’s rehabilitate the word ‘discriminating’ to mean careful discernment, and make being thoughtful a virtue worth some time and attention.
