Day 0: A new job! (for 2 weeks)
For the next 2 weeks, I’ll be joining the Engineering team at Collective Health building an internal tool that I get to turn around and use. It’s a little daunting, really exciting, and I’m going to be sharing my experiences here. Successes, failures, lessons learned, surprises uncovered and misconceptions corrected.
I decided a year ago, that after 10 years working in software companies, I wanted to learn how to actually build software. It takes a village to raise a website, I’m not disparaging my contributions to the organizations I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of. Still, I felt (and still feel) that there is so much to gain in this industry for having a strong baseline understanding in how software is designed, built, deployed, and maintained.

This month, I wrapped up a1 year part time web development bootcamp at Bloc.* In my current role I don’t write code every day, but I’ve been able to automate chunks of my work with Javascript. I don’t do deploys, but I use JIRA projects and Kanban boards to manage my team’s sprints. In a 100 ways, my work life has improved with what I’ve learned. Also I built pretty fun game of Pong.
After working on projects for study, fun, and a bit of side work, I’m confident that the value I add will at the very least outweigh the extra help I’ll need. Plus, in depth knowledge of the code base will be helpful given I’ll be a primary user of the software.
Please do stick around, ask questions & make suggestions. See you next time!
