Turning Down The Lights

Early Intervention

District 75

Jack and Jill went up the hill

I.E.P.’s

Humpty Dumpty fell

Focus focus

Organize your thoughts

Remember breathe

Transition plans

Medicaid

Remember fetch a pail

Watch as their light shines

They have a team to get them through grades k-12

And then….

Graduation

Heart racing. Don’t panic

Because the day after

We all come tumbling down that hill like Jack and Jill

Our children then have a great fall like Humpty

Society builds them up to then knock them back down

How do we put them together again?

No answers. No directions

Left only to stem, stem, stem and regress

In the Autism society

It does take a village to raise a child

We work so hard in the beginning

Why are we turning down the lights later on?

Leaving them sitting on our couches

Regressing back to what looks like infancy

Nothing more then names on waiting lists for programs

Dangling spots like dog treats

While all they can say is we’ll be in touch

Families are left managing meltdowns

For breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Because the routine of learning

Has gone away

Therapists are memories

And with each day

Their lights continue to fade
