Several illustrious organisations have announced awards for architecture and design in a variety of categories throughout the previous ten years. There are more than 60 award categories in total, including built and concept designs. Architecture, interior design, landscape design, construction, and design are the five key categories into which the awards are often divided. There are various subcategories within each of the aforementioned categories, including built and concept designs. The most frequent prize categories are for small, medium, and large residential dwellings. Among other accolades, Dezeen awards have encouraged architectural ideas that use renovation and adaptive reuse (in the rebirth subcategory). Small buildings are another area of architecture that designers should be aware of. Examples include open-air structures, temporary structures, pop-ups, pavilions, shelters, modular homes, boutiques, and kiosks. The awards are also open to architects who have designed venues that provide a cultural experience, such as museums, art galleries, religious structures, libraries, theatres, concert halls, arenas, and other entertainment areas. The prizes for the commercial category are presented by RIBA, among other organisations. Any private commercial space used as an office, co-working space, company headquarters, shopping centre, bank, or gym is eligible to compete. Hotel, restaurant, and bar area designs may be filed under the hospitality category. The other more than ten-year-old categories for architecture and design awards include those for commercial spaces, institutions, sports, and recreation facilities. One of the most coveted mixed-use category prizes is the A+Awards program from Architizer, which honours buildings with a variety of interconnected uses. Other architecture and design award categories that businesses have been competing for include urban design projects, transportation infrastructure, and civic structures. Schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, railway stations, airports, police stations, city/town halls, courthouses, embassies, and all other government buildings are included in the list of places that qualify for the honours. For the transportation category of the awards, projects must be making travel easier and safer for millions of people every day (or might, if they are finished). This group of projects includes bridges as well as train and bus terminals.

The awards also honour outstanding interior design for any residential, retail, office, hospitality, or healthcare/wellness-related buildings. The Rethinking The Future Architecture Awards’ construction category honours women in construction for their accomplishments. Any architectural firm that is promoting gender equality and instigating change in the workplace or on a project qualifies for the award category. The panel is interested in learning about motivating organisations, initiatives, or people who are advancing the crucial role of women in construction. In addition to hand-selecting talent in machinery design and technological innovation, RTF has been a significant platform for recognizing workplace diversity and inclusion. Any design company or individual making remarkable efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity in the workplace or on a project will be honoured with the diversity and inclusion award. The contest is open to inspiring groups, initiatives, or people who are advancing and promoting inclusion and diversity in the workplace. Sustainable initiatives, heavy machinery designs (this award category aims to recognize excellent innovation in construction machinery designs by designers, design firms, and producers worldwide), technological innovation, offsite construction, the women in construction award, and health & safety solutions (the award celebrates outstanding contributions to improved health and safety in the construction industry, whether through product design or process adaptation): these are some of the categories that are being considered for the 2019 awards.

Over the years, the design category of the awards has highlighted visually arresting furniture designs, whether they are outdoor or indoor pieces that offer creative solutions for comfortable living and the environment. Designers of fashion, leisure, and accessories are also welcome to submit their original concepts. Kitchenware design is a distinct prize category that RTF has developed. It recognizes design excellence in the shaping of bakeware, tableware, drinkware, and cookware. Other design prize categories that have been around for the previous ten years include exhibition design, interior design, and signage design. For the landscape category of the awards, any landscape design projects including the architecture of outdoor spaces, such as public or private parks, pools, gardens, gazebos, pergolas, the grounds of educational or commercial buildings, and playgrounds, may be submitted.
