Nerding out for Staple Day

Today’s ‪#‎StapleDay‬! That’s a term someone in the Field Nuts group came up with for when you reach the halfway point in your pocket notebook — when you’re in the very middle, you can see the underside of the three staples that hold the notebook together.

As with past Staple Days, I like to celebrate the occasion by putting a sticker on the front of my notebook — in this case, I’m using a Field Notes County Fair Indiana edition.

(Fun fact: Did you know the first professional baseball game was played in Indiana, in 1871?)

The sticker I put on the cover says “Be the Nerd,” which is referencing Mark Zuckerberg’s reply to a woman who said she encourages her granddaughters to “date the nerd” in high school. He suggested, instead, they should “be the nerd” so they can achieve success themselves. Facebook’s made some stickers and posters out of that quote since then and distributed them internally. (Check out the Mashable article about it.)

It’s turned into a bit of a mantra, but I like it — it has a really simple, positive message to get young women and girls interested in tech, it’s a great design (I love the glasses) and it looks good on the cover.

(Mad, mad props to Scott Boms, a designer at Facebook’s Analog Research Laboratory, for designing this amazing sticker.)
