A simple guide to make an informed decision before you go iPhone shopping.

Which iPhone to buy in 2019 — iPhone 11 is the worth for money iPhone

The new iPhones are out and you want to upgrade so badly but don’t know which one? Here’s a simple guide that might help you save a few hundred dollars.

iPhone 8 — $449 — the cheapest iPhone

If you absolutely need an iPhone and don’t want to waste money, this is THE phone for you. Apple’s cheapest iPhone. It is still powerful on the performance side but when it comes to the display, camera and battery departments, it takes a hit. But then again this phone was released back in 2017.

iPhone 8

iPhone XR — $599 — Don’t buy this phone

I have no idea why this phone exists in the first place. For 100 dollars more, iPhone 11 has a WHOLE lot more to offer. If you think I might me missing something for not recommending this phone, do let me know in the comments.

iPhone XR

iPhone 11 — $699 — Value for money

For the money you give and the product you get, iPhone 11 is hands down the winner. I would bet heavily that this iPhone will be the best selling iPhone of the year.

If you pay 100 dollars more than what you are paying for the iPhone XR, here’s what you get:

  • Dual 12 MP Cameras with night mode, ultra wide feature and auto adjustments, 2x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom, quick take video and audio zoom. iPhone XR has only one camera.
  • 1 hour more battery life than iPhone XR.
  • Has A13 processor (faster than the A12 in iPhone XR and has good power management system, hence more battery life.)
  • Rated IP68 — can survive 2 meters underwater for 30 min (iPhone XR can survive 1 meter underwater for 30 min.)
  • Supports Gigabit class LTE, WiFi 6
  • Has Ultra Wideband chip for features that are yet to be released
  • Has the 256 GB option IF needed (not $699 though)

The only downside:

Display is the same as the Liquid Retina HD display on iPhone XR, which is still a very good display.

iPhone 11 would have been a winner hands down if it had an OLED display.

iPhone 11 Pro ($999) and iPhone 11 Pro Max ($1099) — The best in class

You can’t tell 6 differences between iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max because there are only 2.

Display — iPhone 11 Pro (5.8 inches) and iPhone 11 Pro Max (6.5 inches)
Battery life — iPhone 11 Pro (18 hours video playback or 4 hours more than iPhone XS) and iPhone 11 Pro Max (20 hours video playback or 5 hours more than iPhone XS Max)

Oh and finally, a fast charger is included.

iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max

And they are better than the iPhone 11 in only 4 departments. You get 4 additional features for the extra $300 or $400 more than what you pay for iPhone 11. They are:

Camera — iPhone 11 Pro has a triple camera with telephoto lens

Display — Super Retina XDR OLED display (in short, it is a really good display)

Water Resistance — Up to 4 metersfor 30 minutes

Materials — Surgical Stainless steel and glass design with matte glass finish

It is up to you to decide if these 4 features will make world of a difference for you and you shell or $300 to $400 more.

Avoid these iPhones:

Don’t go for iPhone 7 or iPhone X for two reasons. Their production has stopped and for the same price or a little higher, you can find an iPhone from the list above, with better hardware.

Don’t go for iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max because for the same price iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are available. Apple isn’t even selling them.

Should you upgrade to iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro:

👉🏻 If you are having iPhone XS or XS max, you won’t be missing much except for the minor camera updates and battery life. iPhone XS and XS Max are already having really good processors hence you won’t missing on the speed. You will see real differences next year when iPhone 12 (rumored to have a new design, USB C, 5G, on-screen fingerprint reader, etc.) So hold on if you can.

👉🏻 If you are having iPhone X, I would still give you the same advice that I gave for iPhone XS users, unless you have money to spare.

👉🏻 For iPhone 8 or earlier users - iPhones have really good, long lives, unlike Androids. Hold on to them for as long as you can. However if you want to upgrade, go for the iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro. Nothing else. Anywhere in-between you are wasting your money.
