So, I was doing a consultation this week regarding some database work and got to hear a little horror story from the owner of a site.

Please Note: The owner of the site has next to no programming experience. The only experience they have is dealing with the code that they were originally sold.

The owner of the site contacted me because they felt there had to be another way of handling this particular situation. What the problem boiled down to was the fact that they had 1 large table that had more than 256 columns in it! And better…

There are a lot of tools out there which require you to install their runner on your servers to report the health of things like disk space utilization, free memory or even database access.

Today, I had an incident which stopped the replication of our primary database this wasn’t good. I had no monitoring for this because none of those services was running on my server. That’s when I had an “Ah-ha” moment. …

I’ve heard and seen the following so many times. “Why should I use a framework when I can just code my own framework?”. Or, “using a framework slows down the application, and I need it to be speedy. So I need to use raw PHP”. Yes, those two statements are 100% accurate. You can build your own framework, and technically yes your code would hypothetically speaking be faster if you wrote barebones PHP.

PHP Code on Screen

However, script speed isn’t the only thing you should be worried about!

There are several PHP frameworks out there that are being fairly actively worked on. Let…

Club Co-Founders, Dennis Bartel and Sue Hopcroft talking about Club Roles

Last night marked a momentous occasion for Brampton Talks Toastmasters, we have officially chartered!

Brampton Talks Toastmasters opened it’s doors on September 11th, 2017 and was welcomed into the Toastmasters community with open arms, and a packed agenda. Now, just over 2 months later, we have 17 exclusive members and 8 dual members!

I chatted with Dennis Bartel about a month ago and asked him why he thought the club was gaining such traction so quickly and he responded:

I think that it has to do with us running it like a club from Day 1. Also showing that you can learn while having fun.

Congratulations to Dennis Bartel and Sue Hopcroft on all the hard work, it has officially paid off!

Let’s face it. People are starting to grow impatient nowadays. I know that this isn't a great thing to say, but it’s true. We have been spoiled by having things come back fairly quickly with the use of technology. That’s great, but now we need to take that into account when building websites.

Lots of today’s Internet traffic comes from mobile devices. These devices are great, but they also can introduce a bit of a distraction. If your website doesn't come back within a few seconds, then chances are you will be losing visitors. Depending on what your website hosts…

This story comes from a few years ago from me however, I find it even more relevant in today’s world where everything needs to be done faster and people are becoming even more inundated with emails and other distractions.

I was two years into my career at a company that I loved working for. Being so young, and so keen on personal growth, I was giving everything to the company. I had just been given my first really big client implementation project to lead. It was my time to shine! I took that to heart. I ended up putting in…

You slave away on your product for days or months on end hoping to get noticed. While you are building your product, build your own excitement by posting on social media and even get a few people who are interested in what you are building. However, as soon as the product is launched and ready to go your fanbase seems to have disappeared.

It was a really hard pill to swallow for me. As a software developer running a bunch of smaller sites on varying qualitities of servers, I set out on the journey to develop a tool that would…

I want to share with you some of what we have planned for the keepers to make them extra special.

In addition to multiple colour options for the bases of your creatures, you’ll be able to enjoy a variety of eye colours for each species. The ten colours are red, orange, yellow, green, blue green, blue, purple, brown, gray, and dual. The shades and hues of our colours are different for each species, and the two colours for the dual eye colour are unique to each species as well.

Schatten Eye Colours

The combinations for eye colours, base colours, and special poses will…

Where anyone ends up is neither here nor there. It is not a landscape of darkness, and it is not a plain of fire. Things are not grim beyond repair, but they, too, are not suited for the meek. You must be willing to lend an ear to those that have goodness still inside them, but not everyone is worthy of your trust. Do not expect to travel unscathed by the creatures that find refuge in the shadows.

To wander for eternity is all that’s left for the ones that enter here. Each day and night a tragedy for those…
