Make Important Actions Verbs.
Starting with lesson 2, the book “ Style: The Basics of Clarity and Grace “ explains the detailed principles and how to apply them into practice.
Lesson 2 is about “actions”, how to make actions stand out in the sentence is key to clear and lively writing. Specific actions of the main characters are essential to telling good stories.
It is good to write clearly, and anyone can do it.
As I said in the last post on learning writing, I plan to start writing by learning books on writing. This post is my notes for lesson 1 in the book “ Style: The Basics of Clarity and Grace “.
The goal of the first lesson “Understanding Style” is to call for clear writing.
My main takeaways are:
I need to write, and I need to learn writing. The first step is to start writing and then keep writing. I plan to start with reading books and taking notes of what I learn.
I have three guidelines for choosing books to read:
(1) old books. If a book survives many years and people are still actively talking about it or recommending it, it is a must-read. If you see “25th anniversary”, “100th anniversary”, go take a look at least.
(2) reprinted books. If a book gets reprinted many times, it keeps getting better, and people still find it…
