Do Our Lives Matter? For What purpose?

According to Susan Sontag, “To be a moral human being is to pay, be obliged to pay, certain kinds of of attention.

After graduation, most are eager to change the world. After 2–3 decades of numbing schedules, datelines, commitments, and stretched on all sides, we are just happy to settle into a mindless routine of paying less and less attention to things that are getting more and more important.

I am reminded by Mark Strand’s meditation on our task to bear witness to existence: “We might have come along so that the universe could look at itself…It’s such a lucky accident, having being born, that we’re almost obliged to pay attention, certain kinds of attention”.

Indeed. Obliged to pay attention…to what?

Simply this: What Am I going to do with the rest of the once 3,000,000 heart beats i have left…
