With another week done and added to my time here at Virta, I’ve come to really enjoy the work I do here. Sure there are some slow days, both in the progression of things in the office and mentally. I say “mentally,” as I sit in a booth in the lunchroom leaning against the wall with my feet propped up.
Back slumped in a posture that I’ll be regretting sooner than later? Check.
Eyes half-glazed as I occasionally stare off into the distance while I mindlessly tap away at this sad excuse of a keyboard? Check.
Anyway, that’s enough bummer talk for now. It’s really just a product of the work output from this week. I’m glad that I can reflect and confidently say that I was able to get a number of things on my plate done. When the personal hustle matches the hustle of all the other amazingly talented folks here, it feels good for sure.
So what’s the point of this title you ask? Well for starters, I’ve come to learn that I’m just not the type of person who does well with only one or two things on my plate at a time. That’s not to say I’m amazing at multitasking…cause I’m not. Try having a conversation with me while I’m playing Rocket League, ha.
But I feel like I function a lot better when I’m borderline stressed out. Revisiting the same project multiple times in a week has left me slightly unmotivated to say the least, and it was nice to start to take on multiple projects. Which is kind of weird, if you think about it. You’d think giving a single project your all would feel a lot more rewarding than bouncing back and forth, dipping your toes only a little here and there. But also…not?
Maybe it’s because I don’t have complete 100% autonomy of the projects I’m working on? And in that sense, I mean I’m not the one making the ultimate decision on things. I go through someone. And of course everyone works on their own time table, so chances are when I’m ready to send along a first or second pass for review I’ll be waiting idly with nothing new to start on.
That being said, there are also moments when I’m just like “ok nope, gotta step away from this for a second cause I am not coming up with anything.” And in those situations, having a shift in productivity — while still being productive — does me a whole lot more good than sitting around on Twitter or finding more gifs from the Office…
Of course, everyone’s workflow is different and you may not be the type of person who can function with more than 1–2 projects at a time (also project size is important). Find what works best for you! 🙌🏼
