Words on pictures

We see them everywhere. And it spruces up the reading experience indeed!

Years ago, when words resided on blank pages alone, occasionally interspersed with pictures, the latter got almost all the attention. And so the saying that an image spoke tons of times more effectively than words was well established. So much so that teachers strictly instructed us to steer clear of that “next page with the picture” in order to keep us focused.

And now, it is the picture that keeps us interested in the content.

With umpteen sources for copyright free images, I have been observing how one picture aptly fits so many contexts. Now I can really respect that old adage without getting irritated or cringing.

And then I began to wonder. Will there come a time when we communicate with pictures alone?

Let’s allow that thought to run a bit, shall we? For somewhere down this tunnel I arrived at yet another historical reality.

The clouds are here to stay. Data will persist as long as there is no cataclysmic event, in which case, I’d rather seek to preserve my organic data body than my digital one.

In normal scenarios one can always look up textual data. So, we’ve actually done away with the need to constantly deal with text(Disclaimer: Office peeps, your freedom from text will take some time. This is for us lost lambs in the search for inspiration and ideas) As long as we keep our organic data storage refreshed with grammar and rules, can we not live on verbal communication and pictures alone?

To me this seems fantastic and uber interesting.

Would it not stop our technology induced laziness to seep into languages at the same time allowing for a richer, intellectual, faster mode of idea exchange?

Quora and other social networks have recognized the advantages and introduced picture search features. But then, I wonder if we cannot liberate these treasure houses of ideas from the dreary clutches of social media’s depression alleviating technique?

Why reduce such a marvelous sky into a mere advice or at the most a wallpaper?

This is where my brain stumbled upon the age old practice of painting on walls, caves, stones, etc. No one has been able to authoritatively give one explanation for these images of ancient humankind.

Whatever it may or may not have been, it surely provides for some intellectual entertainment. Game-shows, meeting rooms, class debates, art installations are places where this wealth of images can be put to good use. For one thing, it will needless promote a spirit of enquiry. And then, these will serve as good confluences of the ancient and the modern. A proof of the indefatigable essence of human nature’s persistence. With the advancements in technology why not leverage the nature endowed gift of millions of optic nerve fibers for better purposes?

And today’s entrepreneurial era, where ideas are rapidly being over-chewed, will surely benefit from such a move.
