4th Augusta Developer (Dev and Design)
Developers and designers can sometimes find themselves with a breakdown in communication. Designers can slump and design basic concepts without communicating intention in detail and on the other hand developers can be lazy taking designs and viewing their job as purely logistic in nature, leaving no room for user experience considerations. For both communities there should always be open communication and an exchange of knowledge between both.
This week at the Augusta Developer we had three designers get in front of a room full of developers to discuss process. It is design considerations such as white space and color that create space, depth, and evoke emotion. Without that emotional connectivity development efforts become arduous and can feel much more like trial and error.
Ivy Brown, the designer from theClubhou.se, discussed how different colors can conjure different emotional reactions. This article about the Psychology of color, by Fast Company, will give you an idea about some of the concepts she discussed.
We also had a discussion with two designers from Ocozzio, Julia Tillery and Matthew Veal. This duo also runs a design shop on the side called Teal House. They even designed an initial version of The Augusta Developer website for us and further work is underway on it. They talked about organizational processes of how they approach design jobs and explained what it is like to interact directly with a client, as well as how to transform conversations into design imperatives.
Last but not least, was Kaleb Hornsby’s talk on D3js. D3 stands for Data Driven Documents and it is all about making data look pretty. He conducted one of the best live coding/troubleshooting displays that I’ve ever seen on a live talk and I give him massive props for that.
