A Meetup The Reverse Train Wreck
It was a success! People showed up! This whole post is going to have exclamation marks after every sentence! I lied! Or maybe I didn’t!
Honestly, the first meetup went really well but not for reasons that most people would assume.
What made the first meeting successful? A friend described it perfectly. “It was a reverse train-wreck”. The organizer showed up late, did a talk that took five minutes about something that wasn’t advertised and caught everyone off guard.
What happened next was magic in the only way that life could truly bring. People began to introduce themselves. We heard from local business leaders, developers, junior and senior. Developers using all different languages, frameworks and processes. Then they broke out into groups and started talking about projects. From this collaboration a Slack channel, a Github organization and website were born.
Some of the themes that stuck out to me about what brought people to the meetup were people who are trying to learn something new that they wouldn’t have been introduced to otherwise. There were businesses looking to hire. There are people who just want to be held accountable for their projects. There are people who just want to be a part of the community. What got me most excited was the amount of people who have an interest in getting involved with non-profits.
In the last month leading up to the second meetup we have begun development of that website. We got Jamie Introcaso who has started development using a bare metal React build and Kaleb Hornsby who started the whole thing off getting this bad boy to start humming on Github pages. https://github.com/AugustaDevs
