The National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) — Axiom Learn
In April 2017, The National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) held its 2016 nationwide capacity workshop programme focusing on Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SENDs), Morals, HIV and AIDS. Being one of the consultants for this project, we implemented the SENDS component of the workshop using a two-pronged approach which ran simultaneously for three (3) days across the Six Geo-Political zones of Nigeria. The training programme had both
- Direct Training and
- Step Down training.
This training format dates back to 1879, when teacher education was introduced at the University of Cambridge as a means of providing new skills and added knowledge to teachers. Aside the opportunity for teachers to learn new skills through such trainings, they also learn about education policies and procedures for engaging their classroom and the different student types. Thus, it provides the perfect platform for continuous professional development for educational professionals. One other aspect of teacher training is its usefulness in inducting new teachers.
Across the country, 333 head teachers and school principals in primary & junior secondary schools were participated in the direct training after which they were certified as master trainers, and had a mandate to step-down the training and skills acquired to a minimum of five (5) classroom teachers at their respective schools.
Through our structured monitoring and evaluation process, we were able to examine the step down training and carefully selected the most competent master trainer per geo-political zone who effectively implemented the step-down training to participants in his/her school; recognising them with a cash award of Thirty Thousand Naira (N30,000) to each of the Six (6) master trainers selected as well as a certificate of recognition for a job well done. The recipients of these awards, which are to be presented to them by NTI state coordinators are:
Mrs Ogun Lilian Olusola being recognized at the press conference in Ogun State for performing exceptionally well and being the best out of 54 teachers trained in the South –West Geo Political Zone.
