He described the access to capital being a hurdle for the growing New Orleans biotechnology community, but that this challenge is slowly changing with local investors pouring more into local startups. “I think we will have a difficult time recruiting a large biotech company to relocate here. Instead, we need to focus our resources to create our own momentum.” — Dr. Curley
As a soon to be married man, Dr. Curley also dives into his personal life throughout the article and sheds light on his love for New Orleans . “Work hard and play hard” is an unofficial way of life in New Orleans and he made sure that AxoSim’s culture embraces this attitude, from spending long hours in the lab and then taking time to watch the exciting parades during Mardi Gras. Highlights about Dr. Curley include ‘The Power of One’ by Bryce Courtenay being his favorite book and biggest life lesson as “under promising and over delivering.” He also encouraged readers to Google search the term “-misophonia-”, his biggest pet peeve, which is the genetic predisposition to “ feelings of rage triggered by people is munching, chewing, sipping, and chomping on their food”.
The excitement of AxoSim’s potential lies with Dr. Curley and his team’s efforts to help big pharmaceutical companies unlock cures for some of the most devastating neurological diseases.
