NEW ORLEANS, LA (April 10, 2018) — AxoSim Inc., the Nerve-on-a-Chip® company, was selected as the winner of the 2018 Coulter IDEApitch competition brought you by Pan-American Life Insurance Group on Friday, March 23rd.

The event showcased three startups from multiple industries to pitch their product to a panel of technology experts and venture capitalists including prolific investor and Founder of TPG Capital, Jim Coulter, best-selling author and Aspen Institute CEO, Walter Isaacson, Deputy Managing Editor of the NY Times, Rebecca Blumenstein, New Orleans business woman Tara Hernandez, and last year’s winner and CEO of Acrew, Crystal McDonald. An audience vote determined which company won access to a $100,000 investment toward their next round of funding, provided by TPG Capital and The Idea Village.

AxoSim CEO and Co-Founder, Dr. Lowry Curley, gave a spirited pitch in a packed room of over 300 interested attendees. “The future is happening here in New Orleans. The future is AxoSim,” Dr. Curley stated as he finished his presentation. “It is exciting to share our story with New Orleans and inform the community of the innovative work that’s going on here. This win will impact significant growth in the community and consequently expand our efforts internationally.”

AxoSim has grown to a team of 12 and expanded operations in the New Orleans BioInnovation Center since its founding in 2014 by Lowry and CSO Dr. Michael J. Moore. “Our mission is to enable advancements in human health”, says Dr. Curley, “and we have an incredibly dedicated group that is pioneering this groundbreaking technology”. The Nerve-On-A Chip platform has expanded tremendously and now addresses applications in both neurotoxicity and neurodegenerative diseases.

The pitch clearly described the major problem in finding cures and therapies and why AxoSim will be the solution. “The technology has the potential to bridge a critical gap in the drug development pipeline and we are uniquely positioned to help our pharmaceutical partners find cures for the patients of debilitating neurological diseases such as MS and ALS,” says Director of Business & Partnership Development, Ben Cappiello. Pharmaceutical companies are desperately searching for more predictive screening alternatives and AxoSim is already working with a number of early partners to address this difficult but critical therapeutic area.

Past participants of the IDEApitch include Zlien, a platform for managing construction payments, Audiosocket, a music licensing company, and Lucid, a global audience platform. Zlien and Lucid closed $10 million and $60 million investments in 2017, and are leading the charge as some of New Orleans’s premier entrepreneurial companies.

AxoSim has been heavily involved with the Idea Village for the past nine months by way of participating in its 2017–2018 cohort of the IDEAx accelerator. As the program comes to an end, the company next steps will be to grow the team here in New Orleans and scale the technology for automation.
