I am a sixty year old black woman, born and raised in England. As a black woman in a white society I understand ‘british’ racism and realise it is different to ‘American’ racism…..but that is a whole different discussion.

I follow the situation in the USA as I have family there and am descended from Liberia, which was the country ‘given’ by the USA to freed black slaves wanting to return to Africa…….but that is another whole different story.

I watch what is happening in the USA, as Trump (and maybe others) try to ignite a race war over statues and wonder black Americans don’t play them at their own game.

They want to keep the statues as symbols of their history and heritage….fine. Simply insist that near every ‘monument’ to the southern past there is a statue of a black man or woman in chains with whip marks. Perhaps have a bronze sculpture of one of the MANY named victims of lynchings hanging from a tree nearby their ‘monuments’.

Then stand back and watch how quickly they take their statues down.

Don’t antagonise stupidity, simply put up a mirror.

A good friend once told me "April, the only reason you have been so successful is that you are too stupid to realise how disadvantaged you are!"
