The list of “issues (that) hinder creation of a healthy free open source eco-system with high-profile projects” include several that are not limited to Vietnamese developers alone. Indeed, the attitude of “time is money” prevails among several developers in the so-called Third World. What that attitude fails to recognize is that others who previously made contributions to development of open source software could have used the very same argument to not contribute. Everyone, including developers value their time. Studies have been done on the motivation for contributing code to open source software projects. Prominent among the reasons given is the recognition gained within the community. Recognition brings authority and this is very important in any meritocracy such as the free and open source software communities present.
