Mexico is approaching the next elections in 2024, this means that political attacks between parties have begun, and Artificial Intelligence has been present.

At the beginning of this six-year term, the elections for president was marked by social networks, that by using fake accounts and entire offices of technicians they created trends.

These upcoming elections will also take place in the transition of a technology with enormous potential and that could generate disinformation among voters. The interesting will be to see how much AI can influence the voters.

How much will they be able to influence voting trends or voter sentiment? From my point of view, it will be a great actor in the following months, we will have to be closely following the development of these elections.

Globally, other countries will also have elections including the United States, England, India, Indonesia, Taiwan and Mexico. Seeing the great potential of AI, its rapid evolution, it will be inevitable to see some of the candidates manipulating or trying to manipulate electoral sentiment.

What examples are there of the use of AI in politics?

Artificial Intelligence platforms will be available to candidates and as has happened in the United States, it has been used to create avatars of candidates giving messages.

A clear example is what happened in Chicago with the candidate for Mayor Paul Vallas, of which an alarming video of interracial violence was disseminated. Regardless of the fact that the video was false, it was disseminated massively, generating a misconception of the candidate.

Thus, in the coming months the rhythm of the election will be dictated and for the moment the players are already doing it in a dirty way, using all the forums to disqualify themselves.

The institute in charge of elections in Mexico, the INE, comes from reforms that have left it weakened, with less budget and being constantly attacked by the president. These elections will be a test of citizen civility in Mexico and its democracy.

The hope of regulating the use of this new technology now lies with the moderators of social networks that from the United States can control what is disseminated on their Meta, Google, or X channels.

The legislation that exists in Mexico to regulate AI is outdated and does not contemplate all the edges that are being drawn. The government does not have the necessary weapons to sanction or regulate its use and a few months before the elections this will be excessive.

Some of the examples that have been seen are, that of the candidate of the opposition parties Xochitl Gálvez using her avatar to respond to the president. Another use was the Ricardo Monreal interviewing a character in the history of the United States.

This is about to begin and will surely explode. Later I will be following up on what happens. We will have to be expectant, follow me for next news.
