Good Affordance vs. Bad Affordance

Poor affordance as people would try to lift the tap handle upwards. But to turn it on, the person must slide the handle to its right side.
The device doesn’t have a specific button for power and when you figured out that it’s located within the volume tuner, you’ll have to hold it for around 7 seconds for it to turned on.
The watch have various buttons that signifies different functions but none of the buttons actually serve any purpose other than the tuner in the middle that help adjust time.
This is a book with something like a clasp, one would assume that you have to flip it open, but you actually have to pull it out in order to open it
Water dispenser. There is no color indicator in whether to push (downwards) or pull (upwards) the handle to dispense water.
The soup spoon is an example of Good Affordance as it has signifiers that is clear and concise. For example, there is a long handle that shows that the spoon is meant to be held in the hand as the edges are also smooth and curved which will fit into the hand comfortably. There is also a large oval surface that is curved in, which is like a container that can scope up things.
Tape dispenser There is a space below the exposed tape for the user to put the finger and then pull the tape out
Scissors. Holes are for the users’ fingers to slot in to use the scissors.
A kettle design. The bigger hole indicates the input while the spout which has a smaller hole indicates the output of liquid.
Good affordance & signifier. The light will turn orange when it’s plugged, letting the user know that it’s charging.

Solving the right problem is a crucial step in the design process. Getting to the root of the problem is very important to come to a solution that is effective. Two tools of design thinking are human centered design and the double diamond design coverage model of design. Focusing on the user and the way the user interacts with something makes for a better product than focusing solely on how to better the product. An important skill in any designer is problem solving and the manner is which they arrive at a solution determines the quality of the product they set out to make.

The complexity in products being good is also a great point for designers to think about. With something like a smartphone it is generally true that most people would go through the effort to learn how to use all the features in the phone.

Something I hadn’t even thought about before is the ability to arrive a good product and then having to make an intentionally difficult to use in order to fulfill a specific purpose. Such as making something hard to use so that it is not misused by someone with ill intentions. Or having to make a product child proof so that there are no injuries or accidents that occur because of the product.
